The Parts of Speech

The parts of speech denote to the words, which plays a role in a sentence. In English, every word is a part of speech. The part of speech specifies how the words use in sentences grammatically and in meaning.

The parts of speech may be used in different ways for same words and used in different circumstances. Considering parts of speech is vital for finding the correct definition of a word while using the dictionary.

There are eight parts of speech in the English grammar, listed below:

  1. Noun
  2. Pronoun
  3. Verb
  4. Adjective
  5. Adverb
  6. Preposition
  7. Conjunction
  8. Interjection

Noun

A noun is the name of any person, place, thing, or idea such as, Women, Jennifer, School, Mosque,  Happiness, etc. Nouns are also used with an article such as, the, a and an.

Pronoun

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.  Basically pronoun is substitute of specific noun. For Example, I, You, He, She, They. These are all examples of pronoun.

Verb

The verb refers an action in a sentence. In sentence, there may be a main verb and sometimes one more helping verbs. For example, play, run, eat, walk.  These are the examples of verb. Such as I play cricket.

Adjectives

An adjective is a word used to modify a noun or a pronoun. It usually answers the question of which one, what kind, or how many, what quality. Actually it describe the quality of noun. For Example, Red, Big, Small, Beautiful. These are all the examples of adjectives. Such as, Merrie loves red color, Julie is beautiful girl.

Adverb

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, and another adverb except noun, because adverb never modifies noun. It usually answers the questions of where, when, why, how, and under what conditions. Adverbs frequently end in -ly. For example, Slowly, Accurately, Bravely, Enough. These are the examples of Adverb. Such as, Anderson walk slowly, Jenifer did homework accurately.

Preposition

A preposition is a word located before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence. Therefore a preposition is always part of a prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase almost always works as an adjective or as an adverb. The following is most common examples of prepositions, In, On, At, by, For, etc.

Conjunction

A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses, and signifies the association between the elements connected. Coordinating conjunctions connect grammatically equal elements: but, and, nor, or, so, for, and yet etc. Subordinating conjunctions connect clauses that are not equal: although, because, since, while, etc.

Interjection

An interjection is a term functions as to express emotion. It is often followed by an exclamation. (!)

For example, Alas!, Oh My God!, etc.
