# How to Solve Distance Time Speed Problems

Today we will study how to solve math problems on Distance Time and Speed. Students will explore the formulas for distance, speed and time as well as learn to solve the problems.

## What is Distance

The total movement of an object, regardless of direction, is referred to as distance. The formula for distance is:

D = speed x time

## What is Speed

The rate of change of position of an object in any direction. Speed is also the ratio of distance and time. The speed formula is:

S= Distance/Time

## What is Time:

The progression of events is referred to as time. This progression moves from the past to the present and into the future.

T = Distance/Speed

## Distance Time Speed Triangle Explanation

The rate at which an object moves from one location to another is called speed. It is calculated by dividing the distance travelled by the time. Any of these three values can be found by combining the other two. This illustration is useful:

The words’ placements in the triangle indicate where they should belong in the equations.

In the triangle, distance is across time, hence speed equals distance divided by time. Speed is beside time when calculating distance, thus distances equals speeed multiplied by time.

### How to Solve Word Problems on Distance Time Speed

A dog sprints from one park side to the other. The park is 80.0 meters long and 80.0 meters wide. The dog crosses the park in 16.0 seconds. What is the dog’s top speed?

Solution:

The distance the dog travels and the time it takes are given. The dog’s speed can be found with the formula:

S = Distance/Time

S= 80/16

S= 5m/s. (The speed of the dog is 5.0 meters per second).

For 10.0 minutes, a golf cart is driven at its top speed of 27.0 km/h. How far did the golf cart travel in meters?

Solution:

The first step to solve this problem is to change the units of the speed and time so that the answer found will be in meters, since this is what the question asks for.

The speed is: S = 27.0 km/h

S= 7.50 m/s (After Converting the units, the speed is 7.50 m/s.)

The time the cart traveled for was: T= 10.0 min  T = 600s

Using the formula

D = Speed x Time = (7.50 m/s)(600 s)

D = 4500 m  (The golf cart traveled 4500 m, which is equal to 4.50 km.)
